UKG Pro

UKG's payroll AI and pre-payroll automation, working together

UKG's AI looks at payroll inside UKG Pro. Pre-payroll automation makes sure what reaches UKG Pro is complete, reconciled, and approved. They cover different halves of the same cycle.

UKG's AI works on payroll inside UKG Pro.

Pre-payroll automation works on every input before it reaches UKG Pro.

In both, your payroll staff keep the approval.

UKG has announced AI features for UKG Pro Pay, including payroll auditing by plain-language question, analysis of the root cause of variances, and anomaly detection against payroll history, with payroll staff keeping approval. For UKG Pro customers that is a meaningful step: more of the review that happens inside payroll can be assisted.

Many payroll teams' effort sits earlier: in the files from time, commission, deduction, and location systems that feed UKG Pro, and in the corrections that follow. That is the layer PCLnXAI automates. This page explains how the two fit, so you can decide where each belongs in your cycle.

Two halves of the same cycle
Before UKG Pro: pre-payroll automation
  • Every source file expected and validated
  • Reconciled by location
  • Exceptions routed with reasons
  • Approved load into UKG Pro
Inside UKG Pro: UKG audits and AI
  • Audit reports and pending pay review
  • Plain-language payroll auditing (announced)
  • Variance root cause and anomaly detection (announced)
  • Payroll approval
Used together, fewer issues reach payroll, and the ones that do can be traced to their source line.

When pre-payroll automation adds the most

  • Several source systems feed UKG Pro, not just UKG's own time product.
  • Payroll spans many locations, and each location's totals need to tie on their own.
  • Revised and late files are common, and corrections cause rework.
  • Auditors ask how an amount reached payroll, not only what payroll calculated.
  • Payroll tax liability needs reconciling to collections every pay date.

Using both

A practical setup uses each where it is strongest: inputs validated, reconciled, and approved before they post, then UKG Pro's own audits and AI on the calculated payroll. Fewer issues reach payroll, and the ones that do are easier to explain, because every pay item can be traced to its source line. Our pre-payroll validation for UKG Pro page covers the checks in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is UKG Workforce AI a replacement for pre-payroll automation?

They work on different data. UKG's AI works on payroll inside UKG Pro; pre-payroll automation works on the inputs before they reach it. Many teams benefit from both.

Does PCLnXAI work alongside UKG's AI features?

Yes. It posts approved items into UKG Pro through supported interfaces and does not change UKG Pro's own features.

When are UKG's new AI features available?

Availability and packaging are set by UKG. Check with your UKG account team for your tenant.

Do we need both?

Not always. If your inputs are few and clean, UKG's own tools may be enough. The more source systems, locations, and corrections you have, the more a pre-payroll layer adds.
