Commission and incentive pay into UKG Pro, checked first
Variable pay is where a single wrong row costs the most. Each commission and incentive line is checked against your rules before it becomes a UKG Pro pay item.
Each commission line checked for employee, status, period, code, and amount.
Files placed by the period in the data, not the file name.
Leaver commissions and clawbacks routed to a person.
Commission and incentive files usually come from outside payroll: a sales compensation tool, a finance workbook, or an operations report. They arrive on their own schedule, often for a different period than the pay cycle, and they carry dollar amounts that payroll has little context to question.
PCLnXAI validates these files the way an experienced analyst would, every cycle: confirming the employee and their status, mapping each payment to the right earning, checking amounts against prior cycles and limits you set, and holding anything unusual with a reason before it posts.
What gets checked on every variable pay file
The checks come from your own process. These are the ones almost every payroll team applies:
- Employee and status. The employee exists, is in the pay group being paid, and is active, or is a leaver whose final commission is expected.
- Earning mapping. Each payment type maps to the earning code that carries the right tax and benefit treatment.
- Period. The file is for the period being paid and has not already been paid in an earlier cycle.
- Amount. The amount is within the range you set for the plan, and large movements from the prior period carry a reason.
- Hours. Commission paid during time off, or incentives tied to hours, carry the hours your policy requires.
Files that arrive for the wrong week
A common pattern in weekly payroll: the source system names the file for the week it was produced, not the week it pays. The pipeline reads the period from the data, not the file name, and places the file in the cycle it belongs to. If the evidence is ambiguous, it asks rather than guessing.
Leavers and adjustments
Final commissions for employees who have left, clawbacks, and corrections from earlier periods are the lines most likely to need judgment. They are routed to a separate review queue, so they are seen by a person instead of being approved alongside routine payments. See final pay and terminations for how leaver pay is handled more broadly.

How PCLnXAI handles variable pay
We map each variable pay source and the checks your team applies to it, then build those checks into the pipeline. Your team still approves every load, now with each payment's evidence in front of them.
Frequently asked questions
Do you calculate commissions?
No. Your compensation tool or finance team calculates them. We validate what arrives, map it to UKG Pro, and make sure it posts correctly once approved.
Can thresholds differ by plan or location?
Yes. Tolerances are set per plan, pay group, or location, so a seasonal spike in one business is not treated the same as an unexplained jump in another.
What about negative amounts and clawbacks?
They are supported and routed for review, because they are the payments employees notice first.
How do approvers see why a payment was held?
Each held line carries a plain-language reason and the source line it came from, so the decision can be made without opening the original file.
